Thai Grilled Beef with Spicy Sauce

When I first came to visit Thailand, the first two dishes that I've fallen in love with are Som Tum (Green papaya salad) and this dish - grilled beef with Thai spicy dipping sauce, especially the sauce, in Thai, it is called jaew (แจ่ว). Then I fell in love with other Thai style grilled dishes because of the same dipping sauce. It is a very common Thai dipping sauce in Thai Cuisine. And different Thai local families have different ways to make it.

I'd like to share the gluten-free and low-carb version that I created. This recipe was originally from my learning in Blue Elephant Cooking School. It's a very quick and easy-making dish. The most important and amazing part of this dish is the dipping sauce. The sauce will taste a little salty, sour, spicy and a little fishy and chunky from the roasted sticky rice. It's very delicious and I hope you will enjoy it like I do.

Ingredients

Marinade Beef

  • a piece of strip lion beef (around 150g)
  • 2 tablespoons gluten-free oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon gluten-free soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
  • 1/4 tablespoon ground coriander seed
  • 1/4 tablespoon ground cumin seed
  • 1/4 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 2-3 drops stevia glycerite

Dipping Sauce

  • 2 tablespoon lime juice
  • 2 tablespoon gluten-free fish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon tamarind juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder/crushed flakes (add more or less based on your spicy preference)
  • 2-3 spring onions, thinly sliced
  • 2-3 coriander, thinly sliced
  • 1 small Thai shallot, sliced
  • 2-3 kaffir lime leave, take off the middle stem and then thinly slice
  • 1/4 teaspoon roasted & ground sticky rice
  • 2-3 drops stevia glycerite

Directions

  • Marinade the Beef: In the mixing bowl, combine oyster sauce, soy sauce, white pepper, ground coriander seed, ground cumin seed, stevia glycerite and oil. Mix well. Marinade the strip loin beef into the mixing bowl, and set aside for 10-20 minutes.
  • Making the dipping sauce: In the mixing bowl, combine lime juice, fish sauce, stevia, tamarind juice and roasted red chili powder. Mix well.
  • Heat to a high heat. Put the marinaded beef on the grill pan and turn the heat down to low. Sear until the beef reaches your preferred taste. (For perfect medium: use high heat, 1 minute both sides.)
  • Cutting the cooked beef into nice sliced piece. Sprinkle some sliced spring onions, Thai saw coriander, kaffir lime leave and a little roasted and ground sticky rice.
  • Before serving, mix the rest of the sliced spring onions, Thai saw coriander, shallot, kaffir lime leave and roasted and ground sticky rice with the dipping sauce.
